Why Canada’s Home Advantage Does Not Automatically Make Them a Banker Pick

Canadian soccer fans are getting excited about the chance to see their national side host World Cup matches for the first ever time. The 2026 World Cup is being co-hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada, with Canada hosting 13 of the matches.

All three of Canada’s group stage matches will be played in Canada and having home advantage can be a big boost for teams. Canada will be playing their group stage matches at the following venues:

Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina - Toronto Stadium

Canada vs Qatar - BC Place, Vancouver

Canada vs Switzerland - BC Place, Vancouver

Playing at home will no doubt be an added motivation for the Canadian team but before we get too excited, the reality is that home advantage will not automatically make them a banker pick.

How Many Teams Have Won the World Cup on Home Soil?

Throughout the history of the World Cup, only six nations have managed to turn home advantage into silverware. Those teams were:

Uruguay (1930)

Italy (1934)

England (1966)

West Germany (1974)

Argentina (1978)

France (1998)

So, while home advantage has proven to be important for these previous World Cup champions, only Uruguay would be considered to have been outsiders going into the tournament.

With three nations hosting this time around, home advantage also favours Mexico and the United States.

What Are the Odds for the Hosts Winning on Home Soil?

Of the three host nations, USA has the best 2026 World Cup betting odds to win the tournament with the majority of sportsbooks with odds at around 60/1. Mexico is the second favoured host nation at 80/1, and Canada is further out at 150/1.

History shows that the winners of the World Cup have been teams that are considered to be one the powerhouses of global football, as you can see from the past winners:

5 - Brazil have been champions five times

4 - Germany and Italy have both won the World Cup four times

3 - Argentina have won it three times

2 - Uruguay and France have each lifted the trophy on two occasions

1 - Spain and England have achieved it just once

Who Are the Favourites to Win the World Cup?

Going into the start of the tournament, the bookmakers’ favourites currently stand as:

Spain - 5/1

France - 6/1

England - 8/1

Portugal - 9/1

Argentina - 10/1

Brazil - 10/1

Germany - 15/1

Netherlands - 22/1

Are Canada Expected to Get Through the Group Stage?

The likelihood of a team from outside the top 8 favourites winning the World Cup 2026 is small and Canada’s FIFA ranking of 30th suggests there are many teams who have a better chance. Having only qualified for two previous World Cups, their overall group stage record is six losses out of six, so the more realistic Canadian fans will not have built up too much hope for this tournament.

However, Canada’s chances of progressing from the group stage are looking more optimistic than ever before. The group stage draws pits them against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland and Qatar, with only Switzerland inside the top 20 FIFA rankings, placed in 19th.

Fans will be looking at the matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar and will be thinking that their team should be able to earn their first ever points at the World Cup. The expanded format of the World Cup means that there is an increased chance of progressing from the group stage. In addition to the two top placed teams in each group qualifying to the Round of 32, the 8 best third place teams will also go through.

So, out of the 48 teams, only 16 will miss out on reaching the next stage. While this might not seem much more significant than qualifying for the group stages under the previous format with 32 teams, getting to the knockout phase will be exciting for the fans and will be driving player motivation.

Even if Canada does not have a very successful tournament, fans will be able to enjoy watching some of the best players in world football play in their country. Hosting major sporting events also has a legacy impact, so the popularity of the sport is likely to grow in Canada, increasing participation levels and widening the spectator fanbase.

If the World Cup inspires new generations of soccer players, then this can only be positive for the future quality and prospects of the national team.

Canada might not be a banker pick for winning the World Cup but co-hosting the event could help shape the future of Canadian soccer.
