10 Top Midfielders That Will Shine in 2026/2027 Season

Mixed results at the 2026 World Cup do not diminish fans’ hopes that these remarkable, highly skilled midfielders will define this season.

As Spain's squad lifted the World Cup trophy on July 19th, some older fans might have felt as though they were watching a flashback, recalling the moment when Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta , Sergio Busquets, and their teammates lifted the very same trophy in South Africa’s World Cup 16 years earlier.

The legendary midfield popularized one of football’s most iconic tactical approaches – tiki taka – together with their rise. However, the tactic seemed to fade away following Spain’s exit in the 2014 World Cup, only to come back to life as La Furia Roja became the world champion once again.

You got that right – tiki taka has awakened from its long sleep, albeit with few changes. It has become more vertical rather than horizontal that defined its glory days. One thing, however, has remained unchanged: midfielders are still the stars of the system, now officially referred to by pundits and the media as “vertical tiki taka”.

Here’s a list of the 10 midfielders who are likely to perform even better and shine brighter than ever during the new season.

1. Rodri (Manchester City)

Apart from his dominance in midfield, Rodri is a perfect example of a player who has recovered from a serious injury and come back stronger than ever. Critics doubted whether he would ever be the same again after suffering ACL injuries during the 2024/25 season. Surprisingly, he “came back from death” through remarkable discipline, and became one of 11 players that won Ballon d’Or (2024), FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Champions League while still an active player.

2. Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)

Thanks to his performance with Three Lions during the 2026 World Cup, the 23-year-old midfielder has earned praise for his outstanding spatial awareness, which helped him to score seven goals from midfield. Bellingham is also known for his selfless work, often sacrificing his attacking role to track back and support the defensive line.

3. Pedri (FC Barcelona)

Under Hansi Flick last season, Pedri developed the rare ability to slow down the game and create goal-scoring chances within milliseconds after succeeding in drawing opposing defenders out of position. He carried this style of play to La Furia Roja, helping Spain win its second World Cup.

4. Declan Rice (Arsenal)

Under his leadership, Rice has turned set-pieces into deadly attacking weapons while becoming the “One-Man Wall”, regularly intercepted counter-attacks as a brilliant defensive midfielder, both for his club and the England national team. He averaged 12 kilometres per match during the World Cup and was praised for his powerful long-shots, which often resulted in goals.

5. Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool)

Even though he excelled as a central midfielder for the Reds during last season, Mac Allister was deployed in a defensive midfield role during the 2026 World Cup, helping Argentina national team to defend their title. Critics argued that this approach limited his attacking flair, despite his impressive 93% passing accuracy throughout the tournament.

6. Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Bruno Fernandes was named the FWA Footballer of the Year and won the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award after creating 136 goal-scoring chances during the 2025/26 season with Manchester United. However, despite recording a 90% pass accuracy rate during the 2026 World Cup, Fernandes failed to help the Portugal national team to achieve greater success..

7. João Neves (Paris Saint-Germain)

At just 21 years old, Neves has established himself among the top 2% of players worldwide thanks to his ability to dominate in tackles while sending accurate passes to break through the opponent’s defense lines for PSG. Neves played for the full 90 minutes in Portugal’s Round of 16 match against Spain but was unable to lead Portugal to victory due to a lack of cohesion in the national team’s midfield setup.

8. Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain)

Neves’ teammate in both club and Portugal national team was heavily criticized for the trio’s poor performance alongside Bruno Fernandes and João Neves in Portugal’s do-or-die Round of 16 clash against Spain at the 2026 World Cup. Ironically, despite the national team’s disappointing exit, Vitinha was one of the tournament’s standout midfielders, completing 363 of his 378 passes and earning a place among the Top 50 Players of the Tournament thanks to his ability to evade opponent's pressing traps.

9. Federico Valverde (Real Madrid)

The versatile midfielder is often regarded as manager’s weapon thanks to his ability to make destructive runs into the opponent’s penalty area, combined with exceptional physical endurance. Last season, he played almost every week, accumulating a total of 4,500 minutes, yet showed no signs of physical exhaustion or mental fatigue during the 2026 World Cup while captaining Uruguay national team. He acknowledged his disappointment in an emotional post after Uruguay was eliminated in the group stage.

10. Jamal Musiala (Bayern München)

Jamal Musiala was praised as Germany’s saviour to create attacking threats while leading his team’s forward transition. He ranks first among European midfielders for his exceptional ability to maintain possession in congested areas crowded by opposing defenders and midfielders. Unfortunately, his impressive individual performances were not enough to prevent Germany from suffering an early exit in the Round of 32.

It’s only a matter of time before we find out which one of these midfielders will recover from the 2026 World Cup’s heartbreaks the fastest and turn that disappointment into a valuable lesson. While representing their national team is a source of great pride of most footballers, not all of them possess the right qualities or circumstances to perform at the same level they do for their clubs.

Together with seru88.win this season, let’s see how these midfielders perform in the new campaign. Although not all of them are likely to enjoy a strong start, anything can happen as the season progresses.
